Dalmia Bharat Foundation promotes Goat Farming livelihood for 500 farmers in Kalyanpur, Bihar

Company’s Gram Parivartan Yojana aims to encourage self-employment through establishment of micro-enterprises

Kalyanpur, 18th March, 2024: Dalmia Bharat Foundation (DBF), the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of Dalmia Bharat Ltd. (DBL) has taken a significant stride towards promoting a Micro Enterprise Development Programme (MEDP) on Goat Farming as part of their Gram Parivartan Yojana project in Kalyanpur, Bihar. This initiative has positively benefitted 500 rural families from three Gram Panchayats-Samahuta, Baknaura and Banjari around Dalmia Cement’s Kalyanpur plant (Rohtas Cement Works), Bihar. The program focuses on upskilling the small and marginal farmers on livestock rearing as a sustainable livelihood and encourage building their own micro-enterprises enabling them to earn an additional income of Rs. 5000 a month. The farmers are being trained on improved goat rearing practices with the technical support of Animal Husbandry Department under the Gram Parivartan project.

Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Ashutosh Kumar Tiwary, Deputy Executive Director and Unit Head, RCW, DCBL said, “At Dalmia Bharat, we actively engage in farmer training, providing support to farmers on inputs and livelihood development for both the farmers and the community. We recognize the importance of training programs that equip farmers with the expertise to effectively care for their livestock. Through this initiative, we aim to promote the upliftment of livelihoods for farmers, leading to a brighter and more prosperous future for agriculture.

To initiate the goat-rearing practices 75 families have been gifted with 300 goats. The initiative also provides health services such as deworming and vaccination to 500 families accruing health benefits to over 4000 goats, with the technical support of the Government Animal Husbandry Department in Rohtas. Additionally, the families are provided with 500 Azolla beds, benefitting 4000 goats, which is an ideal food for them and has high nutrient value. Furthermore, 90,000 CO5 (Napier) green fodder stems have been planted for nutritional benefits to the husbandry.

Goat farming plays a vital role in Bihar as goats serve as a valuable economic resource for rural farmers during times of crisis. The enhancement of goat production systems, alongside other small animal farming approaches, is recognized for its capacity to enhance livelihood prospects for small-scale and economically disadvantaged farmers.

Dalmia Bharat Foundation spearheads community development with a focus on rural upliftment. Through targeted training in agriculture, horticulture and diverse livelihood avenues, DBF empowers women, farmers and youth, elevating their skills and capacities for a positive impact on livelihoods.
